Our CCM Women’s Team finished with a draw against top of the table side Melbourne Victory. The Mariners were leading 3-0 with 5 minutes of extra time to play, with the match ending in a 3-3 draw.
As visitors, Melbourne Victory had the upper edge of play early with Gomez having a chance for CCM in the 17th minute. Unfortunately, the shot went well wide.
As the match progressed, the Mariners started to come into the game putting pressure on the visitors.
That increased pressure from the Marines paid dividends in the 31st minute. From a throw in, Gomez received the ball who in turn laid the ball off to Peta Trimis. From about 30 metres out, Trimis unleashed a bullet of a shot, finding the top left corner of the Victory goal and bringing the crowd to their feet. This goal should be guaranteed as a contender for the goal of the year.
Victory had a chance from a free kick late in the first half, but the shot was off target.
Half-time saw the score at 1-0 in favour of the Mariners.
Second half started with Victory making a substitution, bringing ex-Mariner Taylor Ray into the contest.
The second half was only 8 minutes old when the Mariners scored their second. Gomez again had the assist with a neat pass to Annalise Rasmussen. Although the pass went wide of the 6 yard box, Rasmussen was on target with her across goal shot that beat the Victory keeper.
It was only 7 minutes later that the Mariners scored their third, with Rasmussen scoring her second. Gomez was again involved in the lead-up, providing a pass wide to Annabel Martin. Martin then beat a defender with the pass finding Rasmussen who had no problems scoring.
For the next 30 minutes both sides had chances and made multiple substitutions, with no indications of what was about to happen.
To the surprise of the crowd, the 4th official indicated that there would be 5 minutes of extra time. This was enough time for Victory to level the score with goal in the 91st, 93rd and 94th minutes, with another chance that fortunately was called for offside.
The Mariners Women are next in action on Wednesday as part of the New Years Eve Double Header. Their opponent will be Brisbane Roar with kick-off scheduled for 4:15pm, followed by the Men at 7:00pm.
