Mariner's Women left Newcastle this evening with all three points after a gruelling encounter with Newcastle Jets. The scoreline finished at 2-nil with a goal scored in each half.
There was a strong and vocal group of fans, including Yellow Army, who attended the game.
The Mariners appeared to suffer an early set-back in the 2nd minute of play when Faye Bryson was injured. However, while the Mariners were down to 10 players while Bryson was receiving medical treatment, Rola Badawiya received a wide pass on the right in an attacking position. Badawiya then put in a perfect cross into the penalty box where it was met by and dispatched into the goal just inside the right-hand upright by Wurigumula.
The injury to Bryson ended up with her receiving further treatment and ultimately replaced in the 35th minute.
The Jets had some chances of their own with the best coming in the first minute of extra time in the first half. Newcastle’s Melina Ayres only had Mariners goalkeeper Sarah Langman to beat but Langman saved it well with a diving save to her left.
The Mariners scored their second goal in the 72nd minute when Tiarna Karambasis put a through ball to the forward line. Mariner’s forward Shadeene Evans found herself in an offside position and wisely let the ball go past her to a waiting Paige Hayward. Hayward steadied and converted the opportunity with a right-footed shot past the Jets goalkeeper.
Towards the end of the match, the Mariners fans were rewarded for making the journey north in seeing Kyah Simon come on from the bench in the 83rd minute where she immediately got involved in an attacking move.
This win places our Mariner’s Liberty A-League squad into the top six at 5th position.
The team plays their next match with another away fixture. This time their opponent will be Western United who are currently in 2nd position. The game is being played at North Hobart Oval in Tasmania with a kick-off time of 2:15pm.
