The Central Coast Mariners Liberty A-League Women's team secured their first ever win in Gosford yesterday evening, beating Wellington Phoenix with a single goal scored in the second half.
The game started well for the Mariners Women when they enjoyed the majority of possession. The Mariners were for periods firmly entrenched in the southern half of the field with the first opportunity to score coming in the 2nd minute.
Subsequent attacking raids in the 10th and 26th minutes continued to put pressure on the visitors.
Further shots from within the box in the 36th and 39th minutes to midfielders Isabel Gomez and Bianca Galic were saved by the Wellington goalkeeper. Galic had another shot in the 43rd minute that missed to the right.
Wellington had a couple of chances in extra time for the first half but they were well managed by the Mariners goalkeeper, Courtney Newbon.
Score was 0-0 at half time.
The second half started as the first half had been with the Mariners having most of the possesion for the first few minutes but as time went on, Wellington began to find ways to attack and put pressure on the Mariners defence.
Mariners were had some opportunities of their own with the deadline being broken in the 76th minute. After Annalise Rasmussen had missed an opportunity the minute before, she scored from an attacking raid down the right hand side. The move started deep in defence with Gomez who advanced the ball before passing to Trimis around the halfway line. Trimis passed the ball out to Mariners striker Wurigumula who worked the ball towards the penalty box she spotted an advancing Rasmussen. Wurigumula squared the ball to Rasmussen who buried the ball into the top of the net.
Wellington continued to heap pressure on the Mariners but our defence held tight to secure their first win at home.
The Mariners Women's team next play on Sunday, 26th November with kick-off being at 2:00pm. This is an away game against Melbourne Victory with the game being played at the Home Of The Matildas at Bundoora in Victoria.
