A day after the Matildas scored a historic win against France in an extended penalty shoot-out, the Mariners suffered a loss in the Australia Cup Round of 32 against Sydney FC in a penalty shoot-out.
Sydney FC were the first to score taking a 2-nil lead with goals either side of the half-time break to Robert Mak (42') and Patrick Wood (59').
The Mariners did well to get back in the game, levelling the score at 2-all after Alou Kuol scored shortly after Sydney's second goal (61'), followed by a penalty converted by Marco TĂșlio (84').
The Mariners seemed to have won the game in extra time when Harrison Steele pounced on a loose ball to put them ahead 3-2.
Unfortunately that was to not be the case when Sydney's Jaiden Kucharski levelled the score at 3-all with basically the last kick of extra time in 123rd minute.
The penalty shoot-out went to 22 shots with the goalkeepers taking the final shots. Unfortunately for Mariners' goalkeeper Jack Warshawsky his shot was saved by Sydney's Andrew Redmayne. Redmayne followed that save with a conversion of his penalty to give Sydney FC a 3-3 (10-9 penalties) win.
The Mariners will now turn their attention to the A-League Men's and Asian competitions.
