The Central Coast Mariners continued their preparations for Hyundai A-League Season 11 as they fell to rivals Newcastle Jets 1-0 in Orange on Sunday afternoon.

Jason Hoffman's 54th minute winner came against the run of the play with the yellow and navy having plenty of possession and they created many chances but just couldn't find the back of the net. Fabio Ferreira was a positive outlet during his time on the pitch forcing Jets keeper Mark Birighitti into several saves. New import Roy O'Donovan struck the post in an open net situation after a cross was spilled.

Another new signing, Mitch Austin showed glimpses of promise for the Mariners faithful as his 20 minute stint off the bench provided the game with a necessary sparkle it lacked with his lightning pace on the wing creating chances for Fitzgerald and O'Donovan. Anthony Caceres had a shot outside the box just fly wide of the far post but that was the last time the Gosford team threatened as they just couldn't break through the Jets defensive line.

The Jets were outplayed for a large majority of the match but they earned the win through Hoffman's header and defended stoutly against a determined but sloppy Central Coast side.

It was a game the Mariners really should've won but just struggled to find the back of the net in a match they dominated.

The Gosford side continue on their pre-season with a game against Brisbane Roar next week before their opener against Perth Glory at home on October 10.
